Woolies

This is a trip down memory lane for me. I started with Woolworh’s in 1973 in the stockroom in Cliffe High St, Lewes. From there I went to Western Road in 1975 and a couple of months later to Blatchington Road, before returning to Western Road. I never cared much for the job and when I became  manager of my own store in 1979 (Edgware Road Shopper’s World - Woolies answer to Argos), I knew the writing was on the wall. One miserable year later, I was out!

Despite being a square peg in a round hole, I really enjoyed my time at Woolies - the people were great. I wish I’d taken my camera to work more often and got photos of a few more of them.

I’ve stayed friends with Tom Price, Terry Allen & Steve Orpin throughout and  Sandra Murphy (née Kenny) tracked me down after 30 years.

I can’t remember everyone’s name and I know some have died but I’m hoping that someone else will fill  the gaps in my memory.
